EU officially releases revised directive for universal chargers

On December 7, 2022, the European Union officially released the revised Directive (EU) 2022/2380 on universal chargers in its official bulletin OJ, to supplement the specific implementation requirements for universal charging interfaces in Directive 3.3 (a) of the RED Directive 2014/53/EU.

Scope of application

This instruction covers 13 types of wireless devices, including smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld game consoles, portable speakers, e-books, keyboards, mice, portable navigation, and laptops.

Implementation plan requirements

The mandatory implementation date of the revised directive is December 28, 2024 (with a 2-year relaxation of requirements for laptops and an implementation date of April 28, 2026), which means that new devices entering the EU market after the mandatory date must meet the requirements of the directive.

Identification requirements

All types of devices should indicate the power range requirements for charging devices in the user manual. Devices that support fast charging should be labeled with PD fast charging and other supported fast charging protocols. Label requirements: The outer packaging of the device should indicate whether it is equipped with a charger, and the outer packaging and manual should indicate the PD fast charging specifications.

Interpretation of Standard Content

Involving three main themes: Type-C connectors, Type-C cables, and Type-C protocols (functions).
Pin definition, mechanical structure requirements, size requirements, electrical performance requirements.
Definition of master-slave, power supply roles, power supply capabilities, related handshake protocols, and state machine definitions for Type-C devices.
There are separate chapters describing and standardizing the support for USB4 and Active Cable.

EN IEC 62680-1-2: USB Power Delivery specification
A fast charging protocol based on the CC channel in Type-C connectors.
Electrical and power supply equipment can negotiate and adjust voltage, current, and charging direction.
This specification provides detailed requirements for electrical requirements, physical layer, protocol layer, system strategy, state machine, and power rules.

STS can provide customers with a complete Type-C solution service.
